What Is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?
Definition: AI refers to computer algorithms that simulate aspects of human intelligence by processing data and learning from patterns to achieve specific outcomes.
Generative AI:A type of AI that can create new outputs based on patterns and data. For example, it can:
Write essays, stories, or code.
Generate images or videos.
Answer questions in a conversational format.
How AI Differs From Online Searching:
Search: Finds existing information on the internet based on keywords.
Generative AI: Creates original content or responses by analyzing patterns and relationships in data.
Is AI “Intelligent”? AI can process and analyze vast amounts of data to make predictions or decisions. However, it lacks human traits like emotion, creativity, and true understanding—it follows programmed logic.
Benefits of AI for Student Learning
Strengthening Skills:
Improves writing through idea generation, brainstorming, and refining drafts.
Creates tailored practice problems for study sessions.
Deepening Understanding:
Helps students explore topics of interest in greater depth by generating thought-provoking questions and summaries.
Supporting Reading:
Summarizes long or complex texts, making them easier to understand and retain.
Writing Assistance:
Improve writing by providing grammar corrections and style suggestions.
Science and Math:
AI-powered platforms can simulate complex experiments or natural phenomena
AI can generate math problems based on student’s skill level and provide step by step feedback
Using AI Ethically and Responsibly
Appropriate Uses: AI should be used as a supplement to effort and creativity, not as a substitute for critical thinking, effort or learning. AI can be used for brainstorming, exploring ideas, and refining work rather than for completing or creating.
Encouraging Accountability: Students must take responsibility for their learning by actively engaging with the material. This includes critically reviewing AI-generated content and making thoughtful decisions about how to incorporate it into their work.
Modeling Integrity: When using AI, it’s important to acknowledge the source. JRHS students value transparency and integrity in their academic and personal endeavors.
Citing AI in Student Work: When using AI, it’s essential to cite appropriately. For example, in MLA format:
Prompt Used: "Explain photosynthesis."
Tool: ChatGPT (Version 4.0)

Christian Perspective on AI
As a Christian school, JHRS believes that humans are created in the image of God with the capacity for creativity, reasoning, and moral decision-making. AI is a tool that, while powerful, should not replace human thought, responsibility, or moral agency. Students are to engage with AI in a way that glorifies God, emphasizes human dignity, and respects the value of honest effort and learning.
AI Concerns: Data Privacy and Misinformation
As with any powerful tool, AI comes with risks that require careful consideration, especially when it comes to protecting privacy and ensuring responsible use.
Data Privacy: Many AI tools process large amounts of data to generate responses or personalize experiences. It’s essential to understand how student data is collected, stored, and used. Students should not share personal information with AI tools, and choose platforms with robust privacy protections.
Misinformation: AI can sometimes produce inaccurate or fabricated information, often referred to as "hallucinations." While AI may sound confident, it doesn’t always verify facts. Students are expected to fact-check AI-generated content and cross-reference it with credible sources to ensure accuracy.
Looking Ahead
Students have a unique opportunity to shape the future of AI by using it responsibly.
We encourage them to:
Experiment with AI tools to enhance their learning.
Share their experiences and insights with teachers to help refine applications of AI.
We look forward to working with families to ensure students develop the skills and ethical understanding necessary to thrive in an AI-driven world. AI is merely the next technological advancement the students will face in their lives. Technology can be both good and helpful, it’s simply a matter of the heart!
