What do you like most about this Maple Sugaring?

I like the fun we have while hanging out with the other students. Collecting is hard work, but seeing large amounts of sap in the tank in the truck is motivating.

What skills have you learned from this Maple Sugaring?

When I started the class last year, I knew only the basics. Now, in year two, I feel like I could monitor the boiling process much more comfortably. When there are problems, I can more confidently fix the problem.

How has Maple Sugaring influenced your thinking about yourself and your future?

Because I learned and enjoyed the process at JRHS, I now have a small scale operation at my house. We have 60 taps, a small evaporator, and this year we hope to make about 5 gallons. I really enjoy being outdoors with the purpose of making something great happen; there is a lot happening that is fun to discover.

How has Maple Sugaring impacted your view of God?

Maple sugaring shows one of the beautiful things God has created.

What do you like most about Maple Sugaring?

The project allows us to spend quality time outdoors, enjoying God's creation. Learning about the boiling, refining process of sap to syrup is fascinating.

What skills have you learned from Maple Sugaring?

Hard work is a big part of this project. To make a successful batch of syrup, good old fashioned hard work is needed. I’ve also learned a lot about paying careful attention to both time and the process. We have to do the whole process in the exact order or we run into big problems!

How has Maple Sugaring influenced your thinking about yourself and your future?

I have learned to try something new, and have been rewarded. You have to be willing to try new things, and recently I ran the fire in the evaporator for the first time and did quite well. This could be a benefit in my future in that it will help me to build the habit of being open to new opportunities that come my way.

How has Maple Sugaring impacted your view of God?

Being in the woods, out there collecting sap, shows me one of the most interesting parts of God's creation. Taking the sap, and turning it into "God's Secret Delight" is a great experience.
