Diakonos Launch – a Full Moon of Fun, Food and Fellowship

Writer's picture: Jeff PhilbrickJeff Philbrick

Nearly 60 JRHS students, parents, alumni, faculty and friends gathered for the inaugural event of our new “Diakonos Ministry”. Centered around the Chinese Mooncake Festival, participants enjoyed food, fellowship and celebration all under a bright and full Harvest Moon. Similar to the American Thanksgiving, this ancient Chinese festival celebrates a year of plentiful harvest and the importance of family gathering. The Comrie home in Deerfield offered the ideal location for a wonderful dinner, games and fellowship, and of course the requisite “Mooncakes” to enjoy. Mark and Becky Shan, from the Boston Education Association, shared the history and cultural relevance of the Mooncake Festival, particularly to Chinese and American Christ followers.

Diakonos is a Greek word found in Scripture that translates as servant or ambassador. At JRHS, Diakonos is an extension of the International Student Program, a support to the students, as they learn to be ambassadors from their home country, while assimilating and learning from American culture.

Interested in enjoying the next Diakonos event? We will be celebrating Eastern European food, culture and traditions with our Hungarian visitors coming to NH in late October. Stay tuned for more details!
