The school verse this year is Hebrews 6:19, which reads, “We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain” (ESV). This verse is challenging and encouraging me in many ways this year.
First, it challenges me to trust in the promises of God found in Christ. The writer explains why the anchor is behind the veil and why it is “sure and steadfast” in the next verse. In verse 20, he writes that behind the curtain is where Christ has gone as a forerunner in our place. This teaches us that, rather than being anchored to physical, temporary things, I must be anchored to the spiritual hope found behind the veil.
Second, this verse encourages me by giving me assurance of the promises. Since Jesus entered on my behalf, he is the very ground and surety of my anchor. This means that, as truly as Christ entered heaven and received all the promises of God, so surely do I enter and receive those very same promises.
In the words of John Calvin, “for he has not entered only for himself, but also for us. There is therefore no reason to fear that access to heaven will be closed up against our faith, as it is never disjoined from Christ. And as it becomes us to follow Christ who is gone before, he is therefore called our Forerunner, or precursor." This verse reminds me to place my trust fully in Christ, knowing that His work as our forerunner secures the steadfast hope we have in Him.
